Breathing Spaces unites the compelling works of Colleen Schindler and Grahame Lynch in a two-person exhibition exploring themes of stillness, movement, memory, and transformation. Through distinct yet complementary practices, the artists invite audiences to reflect on the interplay between presence and impermanence, identity and resilience.
Schindler’s Permission to be still focuses on mindfulness and connection to place. Inspired by landscapes in Nova Scotia, France, and Ireland, her richly textured drawings use oil pastels to capture layered impressions of time and environment. These works encourage viewers to pause and discover beauty in often overlooked details, reflecting an intimate engagement with the natural world and the fleeting moments of everyday life.
Lynch’s Of breath and water features fragmented self-portraits set against elements like rain, snow, and stormy seas, reflecting emotional states of vulnerability and strength. Using cyanotype and silver-based photographic processes, Lynch combines digital and physical techniques to create layered, collaged compositions that explore the fluid nature of perception and identity. His works challenge assumptions about sight and invite contemplation on the complexities of being.
Together, Breathing Spaces offers a thoughtful meditation on the shared human experience of navigating stillness and motion, calm and chaos. This exhibition invites audiences to reflect on their own connections to memory, place, and resilience, offering a space for introspection and discovery.
