Point Pelee National Park is located at the southernmost point of mainland Canada, jutting out into Lake Erie. It is known for its diverse ecosystems, including Carolinian forests, wetlands and the iconic point itself (a.k.a. The Tip), which is a narrow strip of land that extends into the lake.
WARNING: DO NOT SWIM AT THE TIP. Swimming is not permitted at the tip as it is very dangerous due to the current. Swimming or wading at the Tip is a fineable offence up to $10,000.
Point Pelee is a popular destination for birdwatching, hiking and enjoying the natural scenery, as it provides an important stopover for migratory birds and is home to numerous plant and animal species.
Point Pelee features beautiful sandy beaches, offering visitors opportunities for swimming, sunbathing and enjoying the tranquil lakeside atmosphere. Northwest Beach is popular with families as it features a children’s play area, pavilion, washrooms and change rooms.
The park’s famous Marsh Boardwalk trail extends approximately 1km through the park’s 1,000 hectare diverse wetland, providing visitors with an up-close look at the vibrant wildlife and vegetation found in these important habitats.
In addition to walking the Boardwalk, visitors can also rent a kayak/canoe, take a guided Freighter Canoe Tour, or climb the Marsh Tower for an elevated view of the area.
The Point Pelee National Park Visitor Centre serves as an informative hub providing exhibits, displays and educational programs that highlight the park’s natural and cultural history, as well as resources to help plan an enriching trip.
